THE IMPACT OF CHILDHOOD PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFFECTIVE DISORDERS IN ADULTHOOD

This article explores the influence of childhood psychological trauma on the emergence of various mental health disorders in adulthood, with a particular emphasis on affective disorders. Children often encounter a wide range of stressful experiences–such as parental divorce, domestic violence, trauma, loss, warfare, and other adverse life events– that can leave profound imprints on their psychological development. Childhood trauma may significantly affect personality formation, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships, all of which are associated with an increased risk of anxiety disorders. According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) in the United States, traumatic events are those that elicit fear or cause significant harm to a child’s emotional or physical well-being. The primary objective of this article is to analyze current scientific research that supports and explains the link between childhood psychological trauma and the onset of affective disorders in adulthood. A review of the literature indicates that individuals with childhood trauma are three to four times more likely to develop depression and anxiety disorders later in life. Chronic stress disrupts the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, triggers epigenetic modifications, and causes imbalances in neurotransmitters and stress hormones. This stress response activates glucocorticoid receptors and impairs normal neural development, contributing to alterations in metabolomic markers, inflammation, oxidative stress, and abnormal functioning of stress response systems. Recent studies suggest that early-life trauma, when combined with genetic vulnerability and epigenetic changes, can have long-term consequences on brain function and regulatory systems, ultimately reshaping developmental trajectories of both mental and physical health. Adverse childhood experiences have a substantial impact on mental health, contributing to the development of affective disorders in adults–manifested primarily as major depressive disorder and bipolar affective disorder. Consequently, addressing childhood psychological trauma remains a critical task for mental health professionals.
