Abstract

Sexuality is an extremely multifaceted and complex system, one that can change and affect various aspects of human life. Despite all the interest and relevance of this topic, it has not been fully explored for a long time precisely because of its difficult nature, complex terminology, legacy of historical, religious, political and cultural influences. In our opinion, a rather interesting and relevant aspect of human identification in terms of sexuality is the study of sexual identity. The topic of sexual identity was actively studied by such scientists as A. Kinsey, F. Dillon, R. Warnington, J. Marcia, V. Fisher, D. Byrne, L. White and K. Kelly, V. Kass and R. Fassinger, and others. By understanding the nature and specifics of sexual identity formation, we can gain insight into the complex interplay of factors that contribute to human well-being and the broader implications for the scientific community and society in terms of inclusion and equality. The purpose of this article is a theoretical analysis of the main approaches and theories to the understanding of sexual identity in order to contribute to a clearer understanding and disclosure of this concept. To achieve the goal, the following research methods were used: analysis, synthesis, classification, survey-analytical method, study of scientific social-psychological and educational-methodical literature on the research topic. The concept of sexual identity is defined as a reflection of how a person thinks about himself in relation to the person to whom he feels romantic or sexual attraction. Foreign studies and theories of sexual identity were analyzed. The main opinions of scientists in this direction are highlighted. The main difficulties in the study of sexual identity are identified, and further prospects for its research are analyzed.
