FAMILY PSYCHOLOGICAL RESILIENCE IN TIMES OF WAR: ADAPTATION MECHANISMS AND STRESS-MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Abstract

The article analyzes marriage and divorce statistics in Ukraine in both pre-war and wartime periods, revealing key trends in the transformation of family relationships under prolonged crisis conditions. It compares family dynamics before the war and during active combat, highlighting changes in stability, conflict levels, psychological climate, and role distribution within households. The study shows that war is not only a social and economic crisis but also a factor significantly reshaping personal bonds, communication patterns, and interactions among family members. Leading psychological approaches to understanding family resilience and adaptation under crisis are systematized, including the adaptive-resilience model, psychosocial model, cognitive-evaluative approach, and stress-adaptation-coping model. Their practical applications in psychotherapy, counseling, and advisory work are examined. Each approach identifies mechanisms for coping with stress, strengthening family ties, and developing internal resources necessary for effective adaptation in wartime. Based on these findings, practical recommendations are offered for Ukrainian psychologists and psychotherapists. Special attention is given to integrating theoretical foundations with applied techniques to support families, prevent emotional and behavioral crises, reduce divorce risks, and foster long-term psychological resilience during and after the war. A comprehensive evidencebased approach provides individualized support, restores social capital, reinforces trust in communities, and sustains fundamental societal values. Combining scientific models, psychological support, social resources, and interdisciplinary cooperation is essential for strengthening family systems and restoring social stability in Ukraine.
